Hello my name is Ryan Veldhuizen and I am volunteering as an patient escort at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. Sparrow Hospital is one of several major health centers in the Greater Lansing area. The other health centers are McLaren Greater Lansing and Ingham Regional Orthopedic Hospital. Sparrow has a partnership with Michigan State University which is where I found the opportunity to volunteer. Sparrow is also a part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. It makes it feel like a part of home in Lansing.
As an escort for patients my main duty is to take patients from their room to their car via wheelchair. A typical day usually starts off with me signing into the volunteering computer with my badge. Then I go to the second floor for the transport services room to get my pager. I sign out my pager and proceed back to the main lobby to the volunteer escort desk. I then sign into the pager system and wait for calls to pick up patients.
